The benefits of Himalayan rock salts

benefits rock salt

Himalayan rock salt is formed from marine fossil deposits over 250 million years ago during the jurassic age. This rare and ancient salt has been a valuable natural resource for centuries. Historically, the Himalayan people used this salt to preserve their fish and meat through the year, transporting the salt to Nepalese valleys for trade in the spring. Today, most of the rock salt is mined by hand from the mountainous region of Pakistan. The salt is carefully selected and crushed by hand, washed and dried by the rays of the sun.

What is Himalayan Salt Rock?

Himalayan salt rock is a full-spectrum salt. Rather than just getting the benefit of sodium and chloride found in table salt you get both macrominerals, such as calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, as well as trace minerals. Table salt does not contain trace minerals and it is the abundance of those minerals that you need in order to be a healthy individual. Himalayan salt rocks can be powdered to use as salt in recipes.

While Sea salt may contain vital minerals, they can only be absorbed by your body if your body uses considerable energy. The sea can also be contaminated by pollution and has irregular and isolated crystalline structures disconnected from the surrounding natural elements.

The lustrous pink salt is one of the purest salts available and is used by chefs, spas and health practitioners for its associated nutritional and therapeutic qualities.

What is a Himalayan Salt Lamp?

Himalayan pink salt lamps are large pieces of pure natural Himalayan rock salt with a small bulb inside. They can be solid pieces of salt on a base or decorative fire bowls filled with large crystals of salt (see our range for more detail). They radiate a beautiful warm glow when lit.

Himalayan Salt Rock Health Benefits

These lamps have become hugely popular all over the world. So why do people love them so much?!

It is clear how Himalayan salt rocks lamps may aid relaxation, emitting a glow like a campfire enhancing the ambiance, however are their really additional health benefits - or is just hype?

Let’s explore a few claims in greater depth.

Beneficial for indoor air quality

It is thought that Himalayan salt rock lamps are beneficial for indoor air quality. Why is that so? It is thought that Himalayan salt rock lamps emit negative ions into the surrounding air. What does this mean and why is this beneficial?

Ions explained..

The air is filled with both positive and negative ions.  An ion is an atom or molecule in which the total number of electrons is not equal to the total number of protons, giving the atom a net positive or negative electrical charge.

Negative Ions

Have you ever felt revitalised and relaxed after watching the sea or a waterfall?

Negative ions often occur in nature and are created by things, such as waves, lightning, waterfalls and sunlight. Running water is considered nature’s greatest source of negative ions.

In a nutshell, negative ions increase the flow of oxygen to the brain; resulting in greater mental alertness, decreased fatigue, and more mental energy.

They can also protect against germs in the air, resulting in a decreased chance of picking up bugs that lead to common ailments, such as coughs or a sore throat.

Positive Ions

Positive ions are often created in the home by electronic devices, like computers, TVs and microwaves and many other household items. These can compound problems with insomnia, stress and allergies. Negative ions can neutralise positive ions (they connect together) and help to cleanse the air.

Negative Ions + Himalayan Salt Lamps

Himalayan salt rock lamps DO generate negative ions, but not in large quantities.

Enjoying time in nature, especially around water is the best way to get exposure to negative ions, but salt lamps do generate small amounts, particularly if used consistently over time.

Hygroscopic Properties

Although, they are not a huge source of negative ions, salt lamps DO help improve air in other ways due to their hygroscopic properties. Hygroscopic means that they attract water to the surface and this water evaporates quickly due to the small amount of heat from the light source. This is why we recommend placing a mat underneath lamps in the home.

Water vapour in the air can carry bacteria and allergens, like mould. Salt lamps attract water vapour and carry them to the surface and remove them from the air. This is a key benefit of their presence in the home.

Help with insomnia through colour therapy

Many modern light sources like mobiles phones, tablets, computers and TVs emit a lot of blue light and many of us spend too much time staring at these devices, especially in the evening. This can cause problems with sleep. Salt lamps are a great alternative light source at night, as they can be used without negatively affecting sleep patterns.
